uTimes is dedicated to providing independent news of quality, for the Utopian community in a positive environment for both staff and users. They aim to provide interesting and varied content ranging from war articles to interviews and special features and by recruiting from a broad spectrum of Utopian Backgrounds and targetting a wider utopian audience they hope to bring a high reporting standard with reduced bias to the table.

==Background==
This project was started by Alexstrasza, [[Clarey]], LightNing, Peppie and Stella - who wanted to write or be involved with a creative project. An IRC channel was created, and through friends and contacts, more like minded people were recruited. Various proposals and policies were drawn up, amended and scrapped until a vision was formed, that all involved staff supported.

With [[DragonPortal]] assisting with our hosting needs, they decided to focus purely on news and other articles.

This same five people were chosen to be part of the Executive Board that was in charge of managing the uTimes project and to have a final say in Issue resolution and conflict management.

uTimes was created on the 6th of December 2008.

Remember, if you do venture out onto [[IRC]], the real time interaction may dazzle you for awhile but ultimately you are '''STILL DEALING WITH STRANGERS OVER THE WEB'''. Here are some tips and pointers to take note of.

==UtoNet Culture==
[[UtoNet]] culture is admittedly not for everyone. Most of the users you come across on UtoNet are admittedly fine. Some are elitists. And some are just downright rude with no justification.

Choose the crowd you want to hang out with, and work from there. Don't forget your identity, but don't draw attention to yourself by speaking your mind and disagreeing straight off, if you have just joined the network. Instead, try to take in what you can from other people and blunt their flames, if any, with politeness.

# It throws them off balance
# It effectively shifts the power of balance to a more neutral zone.

Learn how to laugh at yourself, and your mistakes. Eventually, people will respect you for it. People management is an important skill you can afford to pick up on UtoNet, because some of the people here will be just like those grumpy old customers you may have to handle in real life.

==Net Safety==
===Don't accept unsolicited files===
On a Mac, IRCing is a safe and enjoyable experience as there are no current exploitable ways of attacking a Macintosh remotely via IRC, or through the the network connection itself. That being said, with the increasing popularity of the Mac it is sensible to take care and exercise common sense when using IRC, even on a Mac.

:'''1. Don't accept unsolicited files'''

:The most important rule is not to accept file transfers from people you don't know unless you have requested the file.

:'''2. Keep your OS up to date'''

:Enable/Download release updates in order to ensure your system is well protected and to prevent potential remote attacks against your computer.

===Avoid clicking on web page links posted by strangers===
It is rare that you will be pasted websites meant to infect machines with viruses and spyware on [[UtoNet]] due to the small size of the community. Once in a blue moon, spammers or spambots may appear and post links in [[Channels|public channels]], '''DO NOT CLICK ON THESE LINKS'''.

Normally, on [[UtoNet]] itself you may find yourself a victim of a [[Rickroll]], or get linked to a NSFW (''Not Safe For Work'') website such as 2Girls1Cup, Lemonparty, TubGirl and the likes. Don't click it if you don't want to see it, or unless you trust the link/person.

Alternatively, you can use sites such as http://www.submitshop.com/tools/linkchecker.html to check what a link leads to.

===Be careful about giving out personal information===
The people you talk to on [[IRC]] are strangers and you will only gradually get to know them through their messages. Even so, appearances can be deceiving and you are cautioned against giving out personal information without care.

Since this is utopia, you will probably be required to share your personal contact number to remain contactable. If someone out of your kingdom asks for a fellow kingdom mate's number, '''decline'''. You probably wouldn't like it if someone gave your number out, would you? Instead, just let them know you'll inform your kingdom mate that someone was looking for them.

====DO NOT====
* Give out your address.
* Give out your financial information such as a Social Security nr.

==Meeting Net Friends In Real Life==
The vast majority of [[UtoNet]] users are decent, honest people and many people have first met on [[UtoNet]] and later on gone to meet up in real life, establishing friendships outside [[Utopia]] and some even progression to relationships [http://utimes.info/article/2008/12/05/love-through-utopia-part-1],[http://utimes.info/article/2009/01/06/love-through-utopia-part-ii].

Still, you are advised to use caution when meeting net strangers in real life especially if someone seems too friendly and/or too interested in personal details. If you are female, ever the more reason to practice caution when meeting strangers for the first time.

===Practice Safety First===
* Ensure you've talked to this person for awhile and have a general idea of what they are like online - even if you need to talk to others about them.
* Have you seen photos of this person or are they being mysterious and always denying your requests? Do they have something to hide?
* Speak by phone first. A phone call can reveal much about a person’s communication and social skills and let you know what to expect.

===When Meeting Someone===
* Try to meet up in a group.
* If you are meeting someone 1-on-1 regardless of how long you have talked online/over the phone/through text messages, ensure that your location is known by a friend or family member.
* Common sense - Do not meet someone at night in a secluded area.
* Meet in a safe place - meeting for a meal would be ideal. Be careful with alcohol and medications.
* If you're female - get a friend to give you a call an hour or two into the meet-up. If you feel uncomfortable with the person you are meeting up with, or feel that they have an ulterior motive, make up a 'family emergency' and bail after the phone call.

A hallmark of the game is the community feel you get, both of your kingdom and with other players in the game. [[Utopia]] is very much a 24/7 game, in that it never stops. For the casual players, this may translate as you suffering waves when you are logged out. If you choose to play competitively, this may require you to get online soon in response to this wave. As such, communication is essential in the game, whether it be to deal with circumstances such as those mentioned above, or whether it be about rebuilding your kingdom.

Forms of external communication commonly utilized include ICQ, MSN, External Forums and [[IRC]].

==ICQ==
ICQ is a popular instant messaging computer program, which was first developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis, now owned by Time Warner's AOL subsidiary. The first version of the program was released in November 1996 and ICQ became one of the first Internet-wide instant messaging services.

It was commonly used in the past, ICQ is used to a far much lesser extent now.

[http://www.icq.com http://www.icq.com]

==MSN==
MSN, or Live Messenger is probably utilized by a majority of the utopian population. It allows Group Conversations, which makes coordinating a breeze. It also allows for offline messaging. However, the scope of MSN messenger only goes so far, and many prefer [[IRC]] for the presence of bots and convenience which IRC provides.

[http://messenger.live.com/ http://messenger.live.com/]

==External Forums==
Normally utilized by the more organized kingdoms, these external forums have archives of past age performance, player information as well as kingdom theme, goals and targets throughout an age.

A commonly utilized free forum software is [http://www.phpbb.com/ phpBB], which a member will upload and host on their own server.

==Community Boards==
Community forums are commonplace, with the official ones being the OMAC forums hosted at joltonline. Here are a list of forums.
==IRC==
[[IRC]] is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat. IRC was developed by Jarkko "WiZ" Oikarinen at the University of Oulu, in Finland. IRC is the oldest chat protocol in wide use today. The first IRC network, IRCNet, spawned Eris Free Net (EfNet), which led to thousands of other networks. IRC is an effective way of communicating with people anywhere on the globe.
Wizards per Acre is abbreviated as WPA. Unmodified, it is called raw WPA.
Wizards per Acre = Total Number of [[Units#Wizards|Wizards]] / Total [[Acres]]

Magic Effectiveness increases the WPA without changing the number of Wizards. This is known as mod WPA.
Mod WPA = Raw WPA * [[Science_Formulas#Channeling|Channeling Science]] * [[WoL_Races|Racial Bonus]] * [[Honour|Honour Bonus]]

== Effects ==
Mod WPA influences several aspects of [[Spells#The_Spell_Book:_Offensive_Spells|Offensive Spells]], including:
* Chance of a Successful Cast
* Chance of Preventing an Opponents Spell

The modifier for these events is:
Modifier: (Your Mod WPA) / (Opponent's Mod WPA)

The duration of spells (both self spells and offensive ones) are dependent however on the percentage of [[Buildings#Guilds|Guilds]] which you run.
This guide was written by referring to previous hostile situations on the World of Legends as well as the Genesis server.
:'''NB''' It has been said (hasn't been checked) that the hostile meter on WoL and Genesis differ in terms of points required to declare war.

==Significance of the Hostile Meter==
'''For two kingdoms to gain the ability to declare war on one another, two conditions have to be met.'''
# The kingdoms must be at least unfriendly on one side and hostile on the other.
# The hostile meter must not be maxed out.
If these two conditions are met, the kingdom which has the lower hostile meter will than receive the option to declare war.

==Attacks and How they Move the Meter==
Different successful attack types add to the hostile meter at varying levels of intensity. In '''Normal Stance''', the attacks add to the meter according to the figures given below. In '''Aggressive Stance''', attacks add twice as much to the meter (e.g. a Traditional March in Aggressive would add 2 points to the meter, as opposed to 1 point in normal stance).

===Traditional Marches===
'''Traditional Marches''' add 1 point to the hostile meter per hit.
===Razes, Plunders & Learns===
'''Razes/Plunders''' and '''Learns''' add 0.5 points to the meter per hit.
===Massacres===
To my knowledge, '''Massacres''' add 0.5 points per hit.
* This figure has been disputed, with some saying they add 0.7 points to the meter per hit.
===Bounces & Conquests===
Bounces and Conquests add a different number of points to the meter.

For example, a true bounce (due to minor miscalculation) would add almost close to a point to the meter. On the other hand, a fog check bounce would add a negligible number of points (<0.5) to the meter.

It is also proposed that the hostile meter moves as a function of offense sent in conquests however there is no hard evidence that I have been able to come up with to prove this.

==Declaring War & Maxing the Meter==
When a party hits up to '''7.5 points''' they become hostile to the kingdom which they hit. Unfriendly status requires '''2.5 points''' to achieve.

At each day change, both hostile meters decay by '''14 - 15% or 1 point, whichever is greater'''.

Example: Declaration
'''Kingdom Realest''' hits '''Kingdom Bishop''' with 7 traditional marches and 5 plunders in Normal stance (''9.5 points''). '''Kingdom Bishop''' hits
'''Kingdom Realest''' in return with 3 plunders in Aggressive stance (1*3 = ''3 points''). In this situation, '''Kingdom Bishop''' may declare
war on '''Kingdom Realest'''.

When the Utopian month changes from 24th to the 1st, 15% decays from Realest's meter and 1 point from Bishop's meter, making it 8.075 ('''Realest''') to 2 ('''Bishop'''). At this
point, [[War]] cannot be declared but '''Bishop''' has the ability to use unfriendly ops on '''Realest''' such as [[Mystics#Meteor_Showers|Meteor Showers]], [[Thievery#Incite_Riots|Incite Riots]], and
cast [[Mystics#Fireballs|Fireballs]]. '''Realest''' is unable to conduct unfriendly ops against '''Bishop'''.

Example: Maxing the Meter
So '''Realest's''' big brother is unhappy with '''Bishop''' and comes alone. His kingdom, '''Kingdom Shockwave''' sends 30 traditional marches into
'''Bishop''', in aggressive stance (30*2 = ''60 points''). '''Bishop''' decides to forgo Kingdom '''Realest'''. So '''Bishop''' switches to aggressive stance
and retals '''Shockwave''' with 30 traditional marches in Aggressive, on the same day.

This means the hostile meter is at 60 points to 60 points, and neither kingdom has the button.
The first kingdom to hit at the day change will automatically give the war button away to the other.

{{game_mech}}

This guide was written by referring to previous hostile situations on the World of Legends as well as the Genesis server.
:'''NB''' It has been said (hasn't been checked) that the hostile meter on WoL and Genesis differ in terms of points required to declare war.

==Significance of the Hostile Meter==

===Traditional Marches===
'''Traditional Marches''' add 1 point to the hostile meter per hit.
===Razes, Plunders & Learns===
'''Razes/Plunders''' and '''Learns''' add 0.5 points to the meter per hit.
===Massacres===
To my knowledge, '''Massacres''' add 0.5 points per hit.
* This figure has been disputed, with some saying they add 0.7 points to the meter per hit.
===Bounces & Conquests===

===Ambushes===
''Unknown''

===Summarized Table===

==Declaring War & Maxing the Meter==

'''Kingdom Realest''' in return with 4 plunders in Aggressive stance (1*4 = ''4 points''). In this situation, '''Kingdom Bishop''' may declare
war on '''Kingdom Realest'''.

When the Utopian month changes from 24th to the 1st, 1 point decays from both meters, making it 8.5 ('''Realest''') to 3 ('''Bishop'''). At this
point, [[War]] cannot be declared but '''Bishop''' has the ability to use unfriendly ops on '''Realest''' such as [[Mystics#Meteor_Showers|Meteor Showers]], [[Thievery#Incite_Riots|Incite Riots]], and
cast [[Mystics#Fireballs|Fireballs]]. '''Realest''' is unable to conduct unfriendly ops against '''Bishop'''.

Example: Maxing the Meter
So '''Realest's''' big brother is unhappy with '''Bishop''' and comes alone. His kingdom, '''Kingdom Shockwave''' sends 25 traditional marches into
'''Bishop''', in aggressive stance (25*2 = ''50 points''). '''Bishop''' decides to forgo Kingdom '''Realest'''. So '''Bishop''' switches to aggressive stance
and retals '''Shockwave''' with 25 traditional marches in Aggressive, on the same day.

This means the hostile meter is at 50 points to 50 points, and neither kingdom has the button.
The first kingdom to hit at the day change will automatically give the war button away to the other.

{{game_mech}}

== Why Ambush? ==
# To Kill Elites (especially if your target is an orc).
## '''Why? -->''' The have an insanely low defensive value elite
## '''Why? -->''' Ambushes are 25% faster than normal attacks
# To decrease incoming land (especially if your target is a chain target).
# Because you're able to Ambush + Trad him and want to rub it in his face.

== Notes About Ambush ==
# You can ambush each successful attack once. If you fail, too bad.
# You cannot ambush if your opponent used War Spoils.
# You cannot ambush if your opponent's hit was made with Anonymity on.
# If you successfully carry out an ambush you will gain 50% of his captured land, or 25% if he is a warrior.
# You ALWAYS ambush from the last hit to the first.
## You will ambush the last successful hit. Conquests don't count. You CAN ambush an ambush.
# A successful ambush recaptures 50% of the land taken from you.

== How to Figure out What to Send ==
# Take a SoM with < 10 thieves
# Record the value of elites out on the SoM.
# Record the value of offspecs out on the SoM.
# Take another SoM with <10 thieves, and record the values in this SoM.
# Use a SoM translator on these numbers to determine his true number of offspecs sent at you. Do the same for his number of Elites.
# Once you have figured out these numbers, use this formula:

Raw Offense Required = [(His Elites sent*Racial Elite Defense Value) + (His Offspecs Sent*Racial Defspec Value) + Soldiers] * 0.8
Remember, this is the RAW offense required - therefore, don't bother sending > 1 generals, they have no effect!

p.s. If you ever see a 0 in the 'army out' column, it means that he did not send ANY of that army type.

=== Example===

June 4th, YR5 '''call (9:11)''' invaded '''Kzagl (3:17)''' and captured 81 acres of land.

June 4th, YR5 '''I just been (9:11)''' invaded '''Kzagl (3:17)''' and captured 139 acres of land.

June 4th, YR5 '''piercing through (9:11)''' invaded '''Kzagl (3:17)''' and captured 131 acres of land.

'''Kzagl''' didn't take particularly kindly to these attacks, and thought it would be a good idea to ambush one of them, so he took 1 SoM of '''I just been''', the largest hit against him, to see what troops had been sent out against him and whether it was a good idea to ambush.

SOM 1

<nowiki>** Armies #2/#3/#4 (Back in 10:46 hours) **</nowiki>

Ogres: 5,132 (49,308 offense / 11,485 defense)

Captured Land: 143 Acres

On seeing the no specialists (goblins) and high amount of elites (ogres), Kzagl made the decision to get a few of his acres back, so he took another SoM and started to calculate the ambush

SOM 2

<nowiki>** Armies #2/#3/#4 (Back in 10:51 hours) **</nowiki>

Ogres: 4,247 (38,597 offense / 9,598 defense)

Captured Land: 149 Acres

{{table}}
| '''SoM''' || '''Som1''' || '''Som2'''
|-
| '''Ogres''' ||
5132
||
4247

|-
|}

Now, '''Kzagl''' used the SoM+SoM method that people use to find exact defense at home to find the exact troops out. So if you input the ogre amounts into a SoM calculator, you get an answer something like this:

''[16:22:57] <tzar> !som 5132 4247''

''[16:22:59] <[-Honor-]> »» tzar, possible defence values are 4424 5899''

'''Kzagl''' was unlucky and forced to get another SoM to work out the exact troops sent against him since the bot retured 2 possible values, so he did.

'''SOM 3'''

<nowiki>** Armies #2/#3/#4 (Back in 10:44 hours) **</nowiki>

Ogres: 4,468 (39,676 offense / 10,616 defense)

Captured Land: 178 Acres

Now, let's organize the data again.

{{Table}}
| '''Som''' || Som1 || Som2 || Som3
|-
| '''Ogres''' || 5132 || 4247 || 4468
|-
|}

Now we input the extra number into the SoM calculator, and we get:

''[16:25:35] <tzar> !som 5132 4247 4468''

''[16:25:37] <[-Honor-]> »» tzar, possible defence values are 4424''

So, basically the target sent 4424 ogres (well, he sent a few more, but lost some in the attack) to attack '''Kzagl'''. If he had sent some soldiers or specialists (or both) you'd have to repeat these steps to figure out how many of those he sent. Now that we've established that beyond doubt, he sent 4424 ogres, we can calculate what is going to be required to successfully ambush.

Orc elites are great for attacking with, not so great for defending with. Because they only have 2 defense, that's what they defend with on an ambush.
Therefore, 4424 Elites * 2 Defense Value = 8,856

'The defense will fight at 80% of its normal capacity.' So, we multiply that number by 0.8
8,856 * 0.8 = 7084.8

Now, this is another important bit, when we calculate how much offense we're going to send, we don't modify it in anyway. If you're using angel's military calculator to do it, make sure you use the '''RAW OFFENSE''' number.

If you are just sending (5/0) offensive specialists at the target, you would require
7084.8/5 offspecs (send a few more to compensate for rounding error).

* Sending more than one general does not increase your offense.

You always ambush the last hit made against your province by that particular province. So in this case, if the paper had looked like this:
June 4th, YR5 I just been (9:11) invaded Kzagl Elven Grave (3:17) and captured 139 acres of land.

June 4th, YR5 piercing through (9:11) invaded Kzagl Elven Grave (3:17) and captured 131 acres of land.

June 4th, YR5 I just been (9:11) invaded KZAGL ELVEN GRAVE (3:17) and captured 25 acres of land.

You would have to ambush the hit for 25 acres before you could ambush the hit for 139 acres. You wouldn't necessarily have to be successful though, because once you've ambushed a hit by a province, you can't ambush that hit again, so the game moves onto the next hit.

Gangbang Protection (also known as '''GBP''') is a game mechanism introduced which aims to increase the protection conferred to provinces which have been recently hit.

==Effects of GBP==
* Tax is capped at 15% (vs a max of 99%) once above 20% GBP.
* The more GBP on your province, the less an attack will gain from you - all other variables being equal.
* Increase in Military Efficiency.
* GBP rounds off to the nearest percentage (eg. it can be 20% or 21% but not 20.5%)

:'''NB.''' GBP is almost negligible in War.

{{Table}}
|-
|}

==GBP Change==

===Land Attacks===
A land attack (Traditional March, Raze or Conquest) increases the GBP rating by 2.75 * Percent of Targets land taken.

For example if a target is attacked for 120 of its 1000 acres (12%) its GBP rating will increase by(12% * 2.75 = 33%) 33 points, taking it from 0% to 33% if previously unhit - enough to put it into the 'moderately hit' section.

===Non-Land Attacks===
Non-Land Attacks (Plunder, Learn or Massacre) increase the GBP rating by 0.06 * Current Gains OOW.

For example if a target with a GBP rating of 20% (and thus Gains OOW of 80%) which is hit for a plunder, it will boost its GBP by (0.06 * 80% = 4.8% rounded off) 5% to 25%.

==GBP Decay==
GBP rating naturally decreases every hour by an amount dependent on the current GBP rating as shown in the above table.

For example if the GBP rating is currently 63% (heavily hit), on the next hour change it will decrease by 2% to 61%.

GBP also decays whenever the province with GBP makes an attack by the same amount as if it
had made the attack on itself - except that it decreases the GBP rating rather than increasing it.

==Military Effectiveness==
GBP gives a bonus to Military Effectiveness equal to the GBP rating / 7.5

For example if the GBP rating of a province is 63% (heavily hit) their ME is boosted by (63 / 7.5 = 8.4%) 8.4% - ie. 1.084 times it's current rating.

==Uses of GBP==
===Aid Chained Provinces===
If a province gets chained in a war and it is at an obviously disparate size to the rest of the kingdom, what might happen is that the kingdom may approach a friendly kingdom and ask them to hit the chained province with a number of plunders.

This confers GBP on the chained province, which can then be aided with as many soldiers and gc in order to explore him up.

===Building a Bank===
{{outdated}}
The tax cap has been used to build up [[Dictionary|banks]] before - what happens is that '''Kingdom A''' approaches a friendly '''Kingdom B''' and asks them to mass plunder
== Why Ambush? ==

== Notes About Ambush ==

=== Example===

{{table}}
| '''SoM''' || '''Som1''' || '''Som2'''
|-
| '''Ogres''' ||
5132
||
4247

|-
|}

{{Table}}
| '''Som''' || Som1 || Som2 || Som3
|-
| '''Ogres''' || 5132 || 4247 || 4468
|-
|}
