History

UtoNet is a small IRC network, originally built around the Utopia gaming community. UtoNet started out in late November 2002 with the goal of providing a stable, welcoming environment for players of the online web based game Utopia. The older IRC server that had long been home to the community merged with a network filled with a rather unruly user base.

A few months passed, during which time the community was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the server. The soon-to-be UtoNet founders, `Vek and Bergee, decided to solve this problem by pooling their resources and expertise to set up a server where all players could gather and hold friendly discussions. Thus the idea of UtoNet was born, a place where all users could gather and not have to worry about being flooded, attacked or otherwise having their communications monitored.

Rules of UtoNet

The network may NOT be used for:

• Flooding (including flood/clonebots).
• Clones.
• Unsecured proxying (including the use of proxies of any type to avoid a ban)
• Attempts to takeover existing channels.
• Attempts to disrupt network services.
• Spamming and/or advertising of any type (including automatic invite scripts or mass invitations).
• Hacking (including Virus/Trojan distribution).
• Harassment of users or staff.
• Actions that the operators regard as abuse.

Your use of the network indicates acceptance of these conditions. Violation of the rules will result in kills, nickname or channel suspensions and possible access bans.

Nickserv

NickServ allows you to "register" a nickname and prevent others from using it. NickServ is controlled through various commands which allow for registration and maintenance of nicknames.

If a registered nickname is not used for 30 days, the registration will expire and the nickname will be available for anyone to use.

To use a NickServ command, type /msg NickServ command or /ns command.

Command Subtypes

• ACCESS - Modifies or displays the access list for your nickname
• AJOIN - Modifies or displays the autojoin list for your nickname
• AUTH - Authenticates registration or change of E-mail
• DROP - De-registers a nickname
• GHOST - Terminates a "ghost" IRC session using your nickname
• IDENTIFY - Identifies you as the owner of a nickname
• INFO - Displays information about the given nickname
• LINK - Links a new nickname to a registered one
• LIST - Lists all registered nicknames
• LISTCHANS - Lists the names and the total number of channels you have registered
• LISTEMAIL - Lists registered nicknames but matches on E-mail addresses
• LISTLINKS - Lists all listed nicknames
• RECOVER - Allows you to recover your nickname
• REGISTER - Registers a nickname
• RELEASE - Instructs NickServ to remove any hold on your nickname
• SENDAUTH - Sends you a copy of the authentication code
• SET - Sets various nickname options
• STATUS - Returns whether the user using the given nickname is recognized as the owner of the nickname
• UNLINK - Removes a link to a linked nickname
• UNSET - Allows you to clear some information associated with your nickname
