Using IRC

What is IRC?

IRC is an acronym for Internet Relay Chat. IRC was developed by Jarkko "WiZ" Oikarinen at the University of Oulu, in Finland. IRC is the oldest chat protocol in wide use today. The first IRC network, IRCNet, spawned Eris Free Net (EfNet), which led to thousands of other networks. IRC is an effective way of communicating with people anywhere on the globe.

The server used by most is UtoNet. Please ensure you read the UtoNet page especially paying attention to the rules of what is tolerated in the network.

Connecting to UtoNet via an IRC Client

Easiest Way to get onto the IRC Server Your IRC experience may be customized	Requires installation of a client program.
Windows
Run mIRC (download link here). Press Continue when a box asking you to register appears. mIRC remains free to use even after it "expires". You'll just need to wait a little while before the "Continue" option is available. An mIRC Options box should appear. Go to the Servers section and click the Add button. Fill in the form with Description UtoNet, IRC Server irc.utonet.org, Ports 6667, 7000, 9056 and Group UtoNet Add Choose UtoNet on the IRC Servers list Select This should bring you to the Connection dialogue. None of the fields really matter except the Nickname field. This is what people will know you as online. Connect to Server (Upon connecting, your Firewall may ask you to unblock mIRC). On the command line, type /j #xxxx
