Introduction

First, read up on what attacks have an effect on the hostile meter (and how much of an effect) here: Significance of the Hostile Meter.

Basic Strategy

Once you have familiarized yourself with the numbers, take the time to imagine this scenario:

Your kingdom X is Unfriendly with kingdom Y and KD Y is Hostile towards you (KD X) and you want to control the war button.

  • KD X has 2.5 points against KD Y.
  • KD Y has 9 points against KD X.

If KD X is in Normal Stance and KD Y is in Aggressive Stance and KD X waves KD Y with 6 Massacre attacks then KD Y Retals with 3 Traditional Marches and 2 Razes, KD X would gain 3 more points (for a total of 5.5) and KD Y would gain 7 points (for a total of 16).

Now, your KD can wait for the day change and the hostile meters (assuming no other attacks have been made) will deteriorate to:

KD X can then choose to press the war button or wait for their thieves and mages to cast unfriendly spells (FB, MS, etc.) and perform some attacks (being careful to only move the hostile meter up to a maximum of 8.5 points for a total of 13 points 'Hostile status'), then switch to Fortified Stance and wait for their armies to return (and hope that KD Y retals, thereby leaving their offensive army away from home while KD X takes reduced losses) before declaring war and performing a wave with war bonuses.
